University of Dallas Celebrates Completion of Cardinal Farrell Hall

March 12, 2018

Hill & Wilkinson General Contractors recently completed Cardinal Farrell Hall on the University of Dallas campus. The 38,000-square-foot iconic addition now stands as the welcoming point for visitors, students and staff and includes three state-of-the-art classrooms, administration offices and gathering areas. Completed with brick, zinc panels and glass similar to existing campus buildings, the Cardinal Farrell Hall project also included 12,000 square feet of patio and terrace area.

“Working with education partners like the University of Dallas is a long-standing tradition for Hill & Wilkinson,” says Paul Driscoll, CEO of Hill & Wilkinson. “With this project, our main goal was to seamlessly connect Cardinal Farrell Hall with the rest of the UD campus architecture. We also set out to upgrade pedestrian corridors and tie-in underground mechanical to the existing student activity building next door without disturbing the day-to-day campus life of this prominent North Texas campus.”

The project was completed in just under one and a half years and supported the university’s commitment to energy efficiency, water conservation and green architecture, with the goal to achieving LEED Silver certification. Clean walkways with xeriscaping, simple water features and modern interiors adorn the project inside and out.

The project’s namesake, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, came for the blessing and opening of the building on February 7, 2018 which was a highlight for everyone involved. Cardinal Farrell served as the Chancellor of University of Dallas and the Bishop of Dallas concurrently for almost 10 years before being called to serve the Vatican.

“The reason this building is now named for Cardinal Farrell is not just because we recognize his contribution but because his vision for the university should be what people know and embrace when they come here and consider attending the University of Dallas,” said University of Dallas President Thomas W. Keefe. “Our celebration; however, is not focused merely on the completion of a building — nor even a series of building projects. Winston Churchill said, ‘We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.’”

The architect for the project was Perkins+Will.
