1968

After graduating from Rice University and serving in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Luther Hill begins his career in construction working on projects ranging from Dallas’ NorthPark Mall to Perkins Hall at Southern Methodist University. He becomes known throughout the industry for his humility, sense of fairness and strict standards for quality and safety. These traits remain hallmarks of the Hill & Wilkinson way of doing business.

1970-1975

Years of Growth & Expansion

The years between 1970 and 1975 bring Luther Hill steady growth and increasing visibility with projects for Parkland Hospital, DFW Airport and Trammell Crow. It’s a time of innovation, and Luther pushes the boundaries with a design-build approach and investments in training, research and development.

Gary Montgomery: Employee of Longest Tenure

1979

In 1979, Gary Montgomery arrives at Luther Hill & Associates as a graduate of Auburn University and begins his construction career as a project engineer. In 1993, he becomes the company's first Group Manager and eventually moves into the role of Chief Financial Officer, overseeing all corporate accounting and administrative functions. Throughout his long tenure, Gary has a tremendous impact on almost every area of the company's operations.

1985

Luther Hill & Associates Becomes Hill & Wilkinson

While working together at a large general contracting firm, Greg Wilkinson and Fritz McKinstry fortuitously meet Luther Hill through the industry organization Associated General Contractors. In lieu of starting their own company, Luther suggests that the two buy Luther Hill & Associates over time, and the name is changed to Hill & Wilkinson. The official company logo features a blue tower crane which will become the most recognizable part of the H&W brand. Despite entering the business during a deep recession and crash of the real estate market, Greg and Fritz find that their combination of field and office savvy and connections and keeps the company moving successfully into the future.

1987

First Job for Longtime Client Alcon Labs

Alcon Laboratories, a leader in the development of technologies for treating eye conditions, hires Hill & Wilkinson in 1987 to complete a small renovation project at their Fort Worth campus. In the years that follow, H&W completes over 100 Alcon projects including live data center renovations, critical systems upgrades, multi-building interior re-stacks, laboratory renovations, production area modifications, auditoriums and office buildings.

1993

Group Formed to Service Special Projects

In-between large projects, Hill & Wilkinson clients are frequently asking for assistance with small renovations or miscellaneous building repairs. To meet this demand, the Special Projects Group is formed. Special Projects eventually grows to become one of H&W's five divisions, accounting for over $30 million in annual revenue. Projects include interior finish-out, renovation, building envelope modifications, general repairs and specialty construction for clients including Encore Wire, Southwest Airlines and the City of Grand Prairie.

First Job for Longtime Client Park Place

1995

A well-known dealer in luxury cars in Dallas-Fort Worth, Park Place, calls on Hill & Wilkinson in 1995 to complete the construction of a 57,000-square-foot showroom and a large parking garage at a prominent location on Lemmon Avenue in Dallas, Texas. The successful partnership results in multiple projects ranging from renovations to new dealerships for brands including Mercedes, Porsche, Lexus, Honda and Jaguar.

After working in commercial and residential construction for a brief time after college, Kirk Woltman joins Hill & Wilkinson as a field laborer. Over the years, he moves through the ranks acting as project engineer, project manager, senior project manager, vice president group manager and currently serves as vice president division manager of manufacturing.

1995

1998

Hill & Wilkinson sees steady growth over the years, starting with $10 million in 1985 and reaching the $100 million plateau in 1998. For the first time, H&W hires a full-time safety officer, Larry MacDonald, who oversees all safety training initiatives and serves the company until his retirement in 2009. H&W completes its first high-rise, 6565 MacArthur, a ten-story concrete frame office building in Irving, Texas.

1999

First Use of Tower Crane: One Telecom

Following the completion of 6565 MacArthur, Hill & Wilkinson moves on to complete more exciting high-rise office buildings, including One Telecom. The nine-story, 220,000-square-foot concrete frame structure calls for the company's first use of a tower crane on a project.

2000

National Builders Alliance Peer Group Formed

In order to provide clients with continuity of quality and service on projects located anywhere in the nation, Hill & Wilkinson joins with seven general contractors from non-competing markets to form The National Builders Alliance. This peer group begins meeting on a regular basis to share lessons learned on everything from organizational culture to construction methodology.

2000

Lyrick Studios: Building for Barney

When Lyrick Studios, the distributor of television shows like Barney & Friends, Veggie Tales and Bob the Builder comes calling, Hill & Wilkinson is excited for the opportunity to work for the unique client. As part of a plan to unite the company's operations in one spot, H&W builds a 70,000-square-foot tilt wall office building to accommodate administrative and management personnel.

Hill & Wilkinson's long-term commitment to the subcontracting community is recognized when the company is named General Contractor of the Year by the American Subcontractors Association of North Texas five times during a span of over twenty years. Since the earliest days of the company, its philosophy has been to create win-win relationships with trade partners that are based on trust and respect.

Fun Committee Created

After the tragedy of 9/11 and the real estate crash that follows, Greg and Fritz observe that employees seem stressed and down. With a mission to create fun in the workplace, the Fun Committee is formed. The Committee plans and executes happy hours, parties and events, preserving the tight-knit feeling that is a key part of the culture.

FIRST JOB FOR LONGTIME CLIENT ENCORE WIRE

2004

Encore Wire, a leading manufacturer of copper and aluminum wire based in McKinney, Texas, selects Hill & Wilkinson to construct an addition to their manufacturing facility. Over the years, H&W provides design-build services on a long list of projects for Encore, including production facilities, distribution centers, rail spur extensions, corporate headquarters, in-plant line upgrades, equipment foundations and security upgrades. Encore honors H&W with its Vendor of Excellence award for providing exemplary service.

First Job for Longtime Client The University of Texas System

2004

With the completion of the Connections Café at The University of Texas at Arlington, Hill & Wilkinson embarks on a long, successful relationship with The University of Texas System. H&W will go on to complete multiple projects for the System that span across the UT Arlington, UT Dallas, UT Tyler and UT Permian Basin campuses. In recognition of the company's commitment to safety, H&W is awarded over ten of the System's Safety Through Exemplary Performance (STEP) awards.

2007 CENTRAL TEXAS OPENS

After years of building a portfolio of work in Austin, San Antonio, Houston and the surrounding areas of Texas, increased demand for service prompts Hill & Wilkinson to officially open the doors to its Central Texas Office. Led by H&W veteran Kristy Attaway, the office grows exponentially completing projects for Independent Bank, John Eagle European, Marriott International and Buckner Retirement Services. The office has been recognized as an Austin Business Journal Best Place to Work and Healthiest Employer.

2007

H&W hits $200,000,000 in Revenue

With broadening diversity and projects like The Shops at Highland Village, The Joule Hotel and Wise Regional Hospital under the company's belt in the 2000s, Hill & Wilkinson reaches the notable $200 million mark in annual revenue. In just under ten years, H&W's steady growth continues from a peak in 1998 of $100 million to a new high of $200 million in 2007.

2007-PRESENT

Dallas Business Journal Best Places to Work & The Dallas Morning News Top 100 Honors

The Dallas Business Journal first recognizes Hill & Wilkinson as one of the Best Places to Work in North Texas in 2007 based on engagement surveys of employees. The company goes on to rank in the top 25 every year. In 2010, The Dallas Morning News launches its own program to honor companies that have the highest levels of employee engagement, and H&W is ranked as one of its Top 100 Places to Work in North Texas year after year.

2008

Wellness at Work Program Begins

What starts with a basic employee health survey grows to include annual tracking of wellness points to earn insurance rebates and a variety of company-sponsored workouts, wellness days, health fairs, training and events. The Wellness at Work program earns Hill & Wilkinson recognition as the Dallas Business Journal's #1 Healthiest Employer for three consecutive years.

2010

Paul Driscoll Named CEO

After joining the firm in 1983 and serving in a wide range of positions including estimator, project engineer, project manager, senior project manager, group manager and vice president, Paul is selected to take the reins as CEO. His commitment to the company's core values, lead-by-example approach and open door policy have a lasting impact on the company's unique culture.

2010

Virtual Design & Construction Advances Building Process

Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) takes the building process to the next level at Hill & Wilkinson with the introduction of tools like 3-D modeling, laser scanning and clash detection. By improving connectivity between end users, designers, subcontractors and field operations on a digital level and making collaboration more efficient, VDC goes from being the new, cutting-edge technology to a standard practice on many H&W projects.

2011

FIRST JOB FOR LONGTIME CLIENT DAISY FARMS

When Hill & Wilkinson partners with Daisy Farms, a family company dedicated to the research and production of high quality dairy products, the team discovers what it's like to build for a very unique and particular client, a Holstein cow. Daisy cows are the pride and joy of the farm and are given the very best in accommodations, so H&W stays busy completing 24 structures and over 1,100,000 square feet in just over six years. These include infrastructure improvements, milking parlors, breeding barns, animal growing facilities, special needs centers, feed centers and vet science facilities.

2012-2014

Honored as the Dallas Business Journal's #1 Healthiest Employer Three Years in a Row

Just four years after the launch of the Wellness at Work program, Hill & Wilkinson is recognized by the Dallas Business Journal as the #1 Healthiest Employer in North Texas and receives the honor again in the two years that follow. Over 75% of employees participate in the program that gives annual insurance rebates based on points that are earned from participation in daily office workouts, quarterly wellness education days, charitable events and a variety of personal fitness activities.

2014

Hill & Wilkinson reaches$400,000,000in revenue

With repeat clients like Daisy Farms, The University of Texas at Dallas, Park Place, Encore Wire and Southwest Airlines, Hill & Wilkinson achieves another milestone in revenue. The Dallas-Fort Worth and Central Texas markets continue a healthy climb.

2016

Kubota North American Headquarters Completed

When relocating to North Texas from California, tractor manufacturer and distributor, Kubota, chooses Hill & Wilkinson to build its new North American Headquarters. The 175,000-square-foot building is constructed with the challenges of 40-foot elevation changes across the site, a blending of interior and exterior spaces and unique finish elements throughout. With a single tilt wall panel reaching nearly 83 feet and weighing 160,000 pounds, the project represents significant advancements in tilt wall construction and is ranked one of the tallest tilt wall buildings in the United States by the Tilt-Up Concrete Association.
